| Brian Barnes was a short left-handed pitcher who was selected in the 4th round of the 1989 amateur draft by the Montreal Expos after leading the NCAA with 208 strikeouts playing for Clemson University. He raced through the Expos' minor league system in two years, reaching the Major Leagues in September 1990 after posting a 13-7 record with a Southern League-leading 213 strikeouts and 201 innings for the AA Jacksonville Expos. He was also outstanding in four September starts for the Expos, compiling an ERA of 2.89 in 28 innings with 23 strikeouts. In his last start on September 29 (boxscore), he beat the Philadelphia Phillies on a complete game three-hitter for his first major league victory.
